It doesn't take long to get a feel for the Oconee course at Reynolds Plantation. Even from a mid-iron approach on the first hole, a 559-yard par 5 from the "One" tees, you can already hear the waterfall next to the green. It's a natural setting of which architect Rees Jones took full advantage. The scenery is first-rate, from the beginning to the end, Mike Bailey writes. There's not a ho-hum hole on the golf course.

Lost Plantation Golf Club in the bedroom community of Rincon, some 30 minutes from Savannah, is a sassy course that challenges with numerous huge bunkers around the green, and disappearing fairways. This is not a cakewalk golf course. It does have some cakewalk holes, though, for variety - and to get one's stress back to reasonable levels.

Okefenokee Country Club features excellent conditioning and classic, south Georgia terrain, including views of the lovely Satilla River. Joe Lee's designs are usually subtle, and there are subtle challenges here: sloping greens, fairway and greenside bunkers, and tight, tree-lined fairways.

There is one thing the Georgia state park system offers that most other states cannot: Golf courses that are in as good or better condition than most upscale, semi-private golf clubs. The Lakes Golf Course at Laura Walker State Park near Waycross is a good example.

Lakeview Golf Club near Waycross is a good play and a good value for the money, but it does have its drawbacks. The layout is rather awkward, for example, with the distance between some holes unnecessarily long. Also, the signage could be better. But with the low green fees and friendly staff, this is a course I'd recommend, Tim McDonald writes.

The Golf Club at Cuscowilla is a beautifully designed layout that's a lovely walk in the park, amongst the indigenous flora and fauna, through the wild grasses blowing in the breeze, under tall pines and with plenty of glimpses of the big Lake Oconee.

The Georgia Club just outside Athens is one of those golf courses that's relatively easy without being boring. It has good length, excellent movement on the fairways and an eclectic mix of risk/reward holes that can make or break you.
