About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.
Lanier Golf Club in Cumming is a public championship course that is located just a half hour north of Atlanta. Opened in 1970, the course has undergone many renovations over the years that have increased the playability of the original layout. The golf course is player friendly enough to appeal to a wide range of skill levels but it still offers a challenge, which is why in its past it has been chosen as a Georgia Amateur qualifying and U.S. Open qualifying course. There are tall trees along the fairways that will require a bit of accuracy and a heavy smattering of strategically placed bunkers also present a challenge. The occasional water hazard also comes into play. In addition to the golf course, Lanier G.C. has a driving range and short-game practice area that is open to the public as well.

WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME
This course has descended in quality to unplayable! The greens are mostly sand with little grass. You cannot putt at all. There is no sand in the bunkers and the overall conditions is about as bad as it gets. I wouldn't pay $10.00 to play there. I pulled off at hole 11 because it is unplayable.
Lots of work and TLC needed!
Positive: Course was challenging.
Negatives: Everything is outdated and needs to be refurbished. Staff is very unfriendly. Pathways need lots of work as they are falling apart in many places. Trees along pathways need to be trimmed. Poison ivy was everywhere!
Paid a hot deal price and not sure if it was even worth that price.
Good value
The course is in fair condition. The price makes it acceptable. The greens were very slow. Sand traps are very hard, watch out for the club bounce.
Inexpensive But You Get What You Pay For
Several of the greens are in very bad shape and not puttable. Overall course needs a lot of work. The layout is interesting but the conditions are not great. Pace of play is good. I play here when I forget to make a tee time at another course. This is not a destination course.
Course could be in better shape
Some greens and fairways were not in very good shape. Long course, but fun.
Good course for the money
Would be a great course if the greens were in good shape.
1st time to play
Whom ever recently purchased this course is trying to bring it back to its old glory. The greens were in excellent shape. The fairways had some spots but overall it was good value. We plan to play again. They had also redone the club house inside. The menu was limited but if you needed to grab a bite at the turn it would be perfect.
Needs work
This is a nice layout...plenty of elevation changes and very scenic. Unfortunately, the greens are in need of some TLC. Large bare spots on a few greens, and most were heavily sanded and very bumpy. Clubhouse is really dated and showing its age. Ball washers are a joke. I was hesitant to drink from the water coolers on the course. Friendly people though, and the pace of play was good...we played in 4 hours on Saturday morning. Wish they would put some work into this course...it could be a nice play to play again.
Great value for money
Course was in reasonable condition although a couple of the greens were in need of repair - very sandy and uneven.
Pace of play was good 4 of us went round in 3hrs 50minutes
Very good value will definitely play again.
Hazards everywhere
Nice course they had just air raided the greens . The greens are well protected by bunkers. I think it's over priced.
Nice layout, condition is terrible
This course has obviously seen better days. The layout is very nice with some challenging holes, and some picturesque holes. But the fairways look like they've never been watered since it rained two weeks ago, and the greens are rock hard - almost literally in some places as there's no grass. The weed killer has been lost for a while too. The bunkers are hard packed. I'd like to play this course when someone is taking care of it but there's too many other courses nearby that are in OK shape and are just as scenic to come back in a hurry.
Get what you pay for and a little more
So my philosophy on golf courses is that you should get the value for the price you pay. If you believe in this mind set then you will like Lanier Golf Club. If you are one of those people that considers every course they have played when going to a course then you would probably not like Lanier. For $45 bucks it is a decent course with a fairly challenging layout. The fairways are well kept and the rough is not ridiculous. All of the greens were redone about 3 years ago and replace with champion Bermuda. The greens were consistent and rolled true but were a little slow, maybe due to it still being early in the season (Early May).
The par 3's are fun except #10 which is a straight boring shot to a big green.
The down sides are the driving range which is a trek from the course (golf cart drive) Kinda a pain in the butt to get over and back in a short amount of time AND they don't call out the tee times on any PA system at the range so if you're not watching closely you can miss your time.
If you plan to relax after your round I recommend going to Taco Max or around sports bar just down the road since the 19th hole is pretty much a place to get a snack and a drink when you make the corner.
All in all you get your moneys worth and the staff is nice to boot. Not bad for under 50 bucks!
Lanier (not Lake Lanier)
The fairways are very rough, very little grass and it is not very green. The aerated the fairways, lots of clay on top of the grass, doesn"t look as if they blew the plugs out of the fairways.
Some greens are totally black, looks as though they cut the greens with frost in the earlier months. Greens are very firm did not see plugs that may of indicated that they were aerated at all. Hard greens not ball marks and no spin.
The foursome agreed, never spend $40.00 here for green fees. No beer license and no hot food except a $5.00 hot dog. Waste of money.
MAYBE
course was in "rough" condition; greens very little grass, lots of disease; fairways rough; facility shows neglect don't know why...played in the past here and it was a good value and conditions were much better, so I don't know what has happened...anyway, always nice folks, just not sure what is going on there.
Worst place in Georgia diseased greens
This place will be bankrupt real soon. The staff is extremely unfriendly and the course is awful greens have a disease and sand is unplayable
Still Some Fast Greens
Lanier was a beautiful country club.....about 15-20 years ago. It's still a nice layout, and the greens have more or less held up, but the fairways and tee boxes are really showing their lack of upkeep
Don't waste your money at Lanier in Cumming, GA
Place is old and run down, straight out of 1950's. Weeds everywhere. Course is completely over grown and neglected. Who ever owns this place has no money in it at all or completely blind. If they gave me a year of free golf I would not play there again. No services but packaged snacks and maybe a hotdog. Don't waste your money. A real ripoff. Dump. Had to work in every fairway to find a weed to play the next shot from. Knee high weeds and huge ditches in the center of several fairways. Whole place is overgrown.
Good Value...Good Course
Always enjoyed playing here when course is in good shape. Bermuda greens are looking and rolling great. Course drains well. Pace of play is good. Go play!
Very disappointed with course conditions
No grass, washed out areas on several fairways. Greens were not in good shape.
Oldie and could be a goodie
Was probably great back in the day. Good bones but showing age. Nice layout. Needs refresh. Good but inconsistent championship greens. Value is hot deal only.
