Lost Plantation Golf Club is a homeowners course that also welcomes the public. It's a relaxing course with enough challenges to keep it interesting, round after round - all at a great price. Afterward, hang out on the deck with some new-found friends.

There is a lot of dazzle over the 27 holes that make up the National course at Reynolds Plantation. Between the views, dramatic landscaping and Tom Fazio's signature bunkers that are a form of modern art, it's sometimes difficult to keep your head in the game. That's okay, though. It's a course that is to be enjoyed and not taken too seriously.

Surrounded by rolling hills and tall pines, and not far from the Historic Marietta Square, City Club Marietta has the flavor of a mountain golf course with its exceptional views. The course requires excellent shot-making and accurate putting on its bentgrass greens.

The Lakes Golf Course at Laura Walker State Park is deep in the Georgia woods outside of Waycross, with nothing but you and the lonesome pines. So lonesome, in fact, that you are warned not to drive or walk in the woods, lest you run into one of the more dangerous native species, like rattlesnakes. It's a very picturesque course, with three large lakes and small ponds dotting the landscape throughout. Fairways and landing areas are accentuated by links-style mounds.

The Lakeview Golf Club is nicely treed, mostly with tall, stately pines, with some palms and oaks thrown in for good measure. The fairways are tree-lined, with an interesting configuration of holes. And the conditioning is good for a public course that is in a relatively rural part of the state.

Okefenokee Country Club is a private club just outside of Waycross, one of the Georgia cities that lays claim to being the gateway to the vast Okefenokee Swamp. With its name, you'd think the course would be a swampy thing, all alligators, snakes and mosquitoes, but it isn't. In fact, water isn't really evident until the back nine.

The Golf Club at Cuscowilla is a beautifully designed layout that's a lovely walk in the park, amongst the indigenous flora and fauna, through the wild grasses blowing in the breeze, under tall pines and with plenty of glimpses of Lake Oconee.

The Bob Cupp-designed course at Jennings Mill Country Club near Athens, Ga., tops out at a tad over 7,000 yards from the back tees, and, with the narrowness of the fairways, can be a handful from back there.

The Landings is a residential golf community 15 minutes from the heart of Savannah, on a heavily-treed island called Skidaway. It has six golf courses and a little less than 2,000 golf memberships. About 3,500 island residents play the game.
