Opened in 1997, Oak Mountain Championship Golf Club remains something of an undiscovered gem because of its remote location on a mountaintop in Carrollton, an hour west of Atlanta. Ward Northrup built a muscular golf course which measures between 5,187 and 7,056 yards from five sets of tees. With a prime-time rate of $55, it's worth the extra drive time.

From the day it opened in 1993, golfers have been singing the praises of the Cobblestone Golf Course. The course is challenging, scenic but very welcoming. Heritage Golf Links has made a great comeback. After a shaky start in a bad economy, the cavalry arrived in April 2010 in the form of Affiniti Golf, a management company that immediately made changes that altered the vibe of the facility. The name was changed, and the renovations were placed on the fast track. Disregard any previous disappointing experience you may have endured, and come back to Heritage.

A lot of executive golf courses lack imagination. Steel Canyon Golf Club, a par-61 facility located north of Atlanta, is not one of them. The layout and the degree of difficulty are better than you might expect, the greens are very solid and the bunkers are filled with sand and in good condition. Sea Palms Golf and Tennis Resort sits at the heart of the southeast Georgia barrier island of St. Simons. The complex has 27 holes of golf. Marsh is an ever-present backdrop on this parkland design by George Cobb, and there are a few shots over water -- but not many. The greens are relatively flat and they roll true.
