About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.
Lanier Golf Club in Cumming is a public championship course that is located just a half hour north of Atlanta. Opened in 1970, the course has undergone many renovations over the years that have increased the playability of the original layout. The golf course is player friendly enough to appeal to a wide range of skill levels but it still offers a challenge, which is why in its past it has been chosen as a Georgia Amateur qualifying and U.S. Open qualifying course. There are tall trees along the fairways that will require a bit of accuracy and a heavy smattering of strategically placed bunkers also present a challenge. The occasional water hazard also comes into play. In addition to the golf course, Lanier G.C. has a driving range and short-game practice area that is open to the public as well.

Disappointed
I have played this course before and it was a little better but due to the lack of watering and maintenance the course is burnt out and hard as a rock. Play Sugar Hill for a better price and experience.
Nice Course with Friendly Staff
Played this course in a threesome that moved along at a good pace. On the back nine a twosome was beginning to slowdown the pace of play for those to their rear but the course sent out a Marshall and play picked back up. All in all the round took 4 hours with a break between the front 9 and back 9. The greens were very nice, firm and looked great. I have played a number of courses within 20 miles of this one and none had greens as nice as these. The check-in cashier, course Marshall and grill attendant were all friendly and polite. This is a nice course to play and reasonably priced. I recommend this course and look forward to playing it again. Thank you to the staff.
Love this layout!
It had been a couple of years since playing Lanier because the last time we played it it was in the worst shape i'd seen it. This time however, it was in the best shape i have ever seen it and i look forward to playing it again. I highly recommend this course to anyone.
Good place to play
The course was in great condition. The greens are perfect. The sand traps needs sand but that was all we could complain about. It took 4 hours for two so that's a little slow but bearable. And the fairways were like carpet. So without question I'll play again.
Continues to Improve
I have reviewed Lanier GC many times with a wide range of comments. The staff has clearly been working to improve the course. The greens, that have frequently been a point of criticism, are now good to very good. There is no posh country club look, but these play great. The bunkers are average for a course in this price range. Some of the fairways have a few sporadic bare patches. Most of the tee boxes are acceptable, but a couple really need some work. The rest is absolutely no frills. The pace of play at Lanier GC is usually good, but the last couple of rounds have not been very good. This round was in the 5 hour range with no on course staff to push the pace of play along. 5-hours in mid 90s heat is not much fun.
the worst course staffs
we played early today, tee off 7:10, we finished 11:25, total time 4:15, even with one 80 year old golfer in our foursome.
the range's attitude is the worst i ever experienced, very poor manner, yelling at us, pushing us.
Rained Out
Got rained out on the 13th hole and didn't know if there would be a rain check or not. Couldn't find out because the club house closed up.
Underrated Course
I played this course on a weekday afternoon - as such I cannot comment on pace of play issues as the course was relatively empty.
The course was in excellent shape with an uncomplicated layout - greens and tee boxes were in great condition. I will say there are a lot of traps guarding the greens and fairways. The traps are in good shape - but plentiful.
I don't understand some of the negative reviews here...this is a great little public course that any average golfer should enjoy. The course is older - built around 1970 I believe - the feel is of an old style muni in the burbs. Also, I had a great homemade barbecue sandwich in the clubhouse.
All in all this is a great golf bargain on a course with an uncomplicated "classic" layout. The employees are unpretentious and very friendly. Give this place a shot...
Good option - no frills
I would say the greens, fairways, and tee boxes were in good shape. Greens were very good - fast. Plenty of distance. Don't expect expensive plants and the clubhouse is a little dated, but they did have a couple bears on tap.
I enjoyed the course and will play it again.
Course is maintained very well. I cant wait to play it again.
Great Layout That Needs Some TLC
The greens are fully grown-in with a slightly slow but reasonable pace. The rest of the course is being under water given the hot and dry conditions. Only the greens are getting sufficient water. The fairways and some of the rough are mostly hard and turning brown. One of the tee boxes is almost dead and bare.
During this specific round, there was no effort to manage the pace of play. A single foursome was allowed to fall 4 holes behind clogging up the course. I estimate that their pace of play exceeded 5 hours.
Improving
Lanier GC is one of my favorite layouts. In recent years the course has been somewhat minimally maintained. The course is in fair condition and very playable. There following is a summary:
Tee boxes : reasonably flat with fair turf conditioning (13 is an exception)
Fairways: firm with decent turf
Rough: difficult, you can find your ball, overall plays fairly
Bunkers: groomed and very playable, the sand is not consistent from bunker to bunker
Greens: The Bermuda greens are being maintained and are well grown-in. These greens are moderately firm, consistent (smooth), and slow (too slow).
Overall the course does not have a polished look.
GOOD VALUE
Course is in great shape. staff is friendy
Not bad
Not the prettiest course but in decent shape with good greens. Got out very early played straight thru in <4 hours. Worth the $44. Range is all grass and wide open. Will be back.
Nice Local Track
I live about 15 minutes from here and often golf 9 or 18 in the afternoon. The course is an old school layout with the front nine requiring good course managment as it is tight and the back opens up more. Not a lot of trouble with only a few forced carries. The bunkering is this course's defense. Unfortunately, quite a few of the bunkers need some attention. The course is generally in good shape. Pace of play can be a bit slow on the weekends but if you grab it in the afternoon during the week you'll breeze around in about 3 1/2 hours.
Great short Course
The course was challenging yet, if played correctly, good scores will be the result. Staff friendly.
Not happy.
I was not happy with this course whatsoever. I was rushed through 18 holes, the staff was very rude and I payed for a 1 person tee time and I was stuck in a group of 3 very experienced players.
5 minute late, they charged me extra over $20.
5 minute late, they charged me extra over $20.
Staff's explanation.
I made a reservation for 3 person. Staff is saying that 1 more person supposed to play with us. But since i am late, 1 player took 1 cart and started golf.
We took 2 cart for 3 play. So 1 more cart was used. That 's why I have to pay little over $20 for the cart. I played around a lot but never heard that. All other golf club staff was very friendly and never asked to pay more.
I was amazed but i have 1 couples from Boston and I couldn't argue for that because i didn't want to ruin their feeling.
Lanier golf club
Not nearly as poor as other reviewers have portrayed. While it's not the greatest course in the area and some holes are in poor condition the course is good for tuning up your game and at $15 a good deal.
