Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.

Lanier Golf Club in Cumming is a public championship course that is located just a half hour north of Atlanta. Opened in 1970, the course has undergone many renovations over the years that have increased the playability of the original layout. The golf course is player friendly enough to appeal to a wide range of skill levels but it still offers a challenge, which is why in its past it has been chosen as a Georgia Amateur qualifying and U.S. Open qualifying course. There are tall trees along the fairways that will require a bit of accuracy and a heavy smattering of strategically placed bunkers also present a challenge. The occasional water hazard also comes into play. In addition to the golf course, Lanier G.C. has a driving range and short-game practice area that is open to the public as well.

Pace of play was very slow and the course was in fair condition. Tee boxes are in really bad shape.

Poor Value

I have played this course several times in the last 8 years and never go into it expecting much but usually the price is right. This time I felt cheated paying $35 for a round on this run down course. Not only is the cart path similar to riding on rugged terrain, but there are large gapping holes in the grounds in several areas. Not to mention hornets nests in at least three different bunkers. The icing on the cake was the sprinklers running on the green on hole 11 at 1045am. Gave a whole new meaning to the water hazard! Definitely will not spend $35 to play here again. Maybe $10 if I'm looking for a fun house golfing experience.

Once a gem - still worth the effort

Very nice layout. Lanier GC needs some TLC. The greens were once some of the best, but are now maintain to the level of a low end muni. Reasonable rates and very playable course.

Goat track

I thought hard on whether to write this review or not and decided to write it.

I've played here probably five or six times a year over the last five or six years. I've seen it go down hill in a big way and it looks like it's just about run its course. I just don't see it withstanding the forces which are against it surviving.

When you walk into a pro-shop, you will not see a pro. There is a teenager - a very nice and courteous young boy, that runs the counter. You will not see balls, clubs, clothes, shoes, socks - nothing to buy except a few slazenger, top flite and water balls they dredge out of the pond on number six. Oh yeah, they do have about 7 gloves in size cadet L that you could choose from, but that's about it. There's a copier in the "pro-shop" and a small table with a FOREGeorgia magazine and just used Tupperware container where someone just ate last nights leftovers. Oh, yeah, don't forget about the nickel gumball machine and the full-length wall mirror as you walk in the front...

So, you'll be needing to stock up on everything golf related BEFORE you come to play - batteries, tees, beer, food, balls, everything... They have nothing for you or for your round of golf.

Once you sign in, you'll have an awkward walk out to the cart area, where the carts are gas-powered, clean and fast. The course itself is very very short. There are three good holes of the 18. #1, #4 and #16 - all short par 5s. The rest of the holes are totally forgettable and if you choose to play you'll see why.

There is no maintenance being done - no maintenance people. The greens are not cut/mowed and the green surface looks like a shag carpet that is laying down. The ball bumps, bounces and saunters along the green surface once struck. There is no roll...The fairways with few exception are hard compacted Georgia red-clay and your ball is going to bounce hard and roll into unkempt junk. Overall it's not a great experience. Now, if you just want to go bang some balls around and have no interest in the aesthetics of the game, then this maybe a bargain at $10 hot deal. But I would not pay any more than $10, that's for sure.

In a few words, play at your own peril. On a brighter note, no one plays here so you'll be able to get 18 holes in in about two hours or less. The day I played it was about 58 degrees and not a cloud in the sky - you'd expect there to be a lot of cars in the parking lot. Other than mine, there were six cars. One was the guy behind the counter, one was mine. Look - word has been out that this course has run its usefulness, and people in this area, if they're still playing golf, are not playing here. I'm sorry to have had to write this but it's all true.

If you ever see me out here again, it'll be because there's an $10 or less hot deal, I won't have much time to play and I just need to knock some rust off. It just barely beats hitting balls at the range, but just barely. Sorry Lanier, but you've brought this onto yourself... the decline began when you allowed your two starters back in 2009/2010 era to drive around like policemen brow beating and yelling at golfers for not driving thru the "gates" then letting the pro-shop fall apart, then when you got rid of your beverage cart, then letting the course maintenance go.

Regular- due to location. Staff not as friendly as other courses. More concerned about the $ than service.

Nice Greens for January 31!

I enjoyed my round. The fairways we okay considering they are dormant for the winter. There was grass as opposed to some courses that are just mud at this time of year. Greens rolled very smooth.

Nice course layout

Played 18 on 1/31/16. Our 4some teed off earlier that our 10:21 tee time. Played a quick front 9 and only got held up on the back nine a couple of times. The course has taken some damage from recent rains but they are working to correct those issues. Some of the bunkers had hardpack sand (especially the fairway bunkers) but that is not uncommon with the weather this time of year. The greens were not too bad and were running true. They should have the course back in shape by Spring. Its a nice hidden jewel in my neck of the woods. Will likely play here again soon.

Course

When we played it had been raining for a few days before and the course was in great condition. Obviously can't avoid all the mud and wet but it was great. Beer was super expensive. Nice and open course. Great for learning. Will play again

Old course

Went on a day after 1/2 inch of rain and played cart path only golf. Greens were great. Fast and true. Not much in terms of club house offerings. You can get some tees and a dozen balls but you may want to have all that before you arrive here. I'd come out and play again once everything dries out.

Much Improved - Go Play Lanier!

I was one of the guys who has avoided Lanier because of their bad greens, but they are perfect now!

Fairways are typical winter condition, but still fair.

Lanier is a good test of you game, and the folks are always more than friendly here...

Decent course

Course conditions were average for a chilly day. Greens were in great shape and played faster than expected. Bunkers could use regular raking. Not a bad choice for a Hot Deal on Golf Now.

Lots of fun

Wonderful round of golf on a well maintained course for this time of year. Pace was good based on the large number of players on the course. Will return soon.

Rude staff!!

I booked 2:15 tee time to play as a single b/c is was cheaper than normal and double checked all receipts/confirmations/etc about playing as single and not paying extra only to show up and be charged an additional $20 (my initial fee was $15) for a cart and was told it was "out of their hands" There was NO ONE on the course in the middle of the day and I've played as a single in my own cart all over the state of GA and have never had this issue. So I ended up paying more than I would've as a walk up. Not to mention the course was pretty sad and I lost a few balls in the middle of the fairway. Forget this place, go to Hampton Golf Village. Cheaper and in way better shape and the staff is friendly. Never again, Lanier.

Getting better

This course continues to improve. Greens are getting better and tees have grass. Fairways are noticeably better with grass to the rough.
Bar b q sandwich is real pulled pork & chicken; some of the best you'll find.
Need someone to blow the leaves off the greens and aprons in the morning.
If it continues to improve it will become a real gem.

Changes

The course is not being taken care of. The areas between holes are not mowed. Trees and shrubs are over grown in the fairways and tees and over all the course is being left in disrepair.

Very disappointed in the way that a wonderful old course is being allowed to deteriorate.

Enjoyable Golf

On a beautiful day, the course was in great shape. Fast, firm greens and lush fairways. The only thing tricky was the wind. Flags were tucked on the corners of the large greens. Greens were running true, but the large undulations can require challenging second putts. Rates on Golf Now made this a steal.
